I have been living in Nashville for 27 years so by now, it's HOME. Being a professional musician since high school. I started playing the harmonica when I was almost 30.
The folks I first started listening to were: Norton Buffalo, Charlie McCoy, DUANE ALLMAN, Jelly Roll Johnson, Paul Delay, LOUIE ARMSTRONG, Phil Gazell, DAVID LINDLEY & later on, Mad Cat Ruth, Howard Levy & Lee Osker. When I first got to Nashville, my first "harp friends" were Jelly Roll(he got me hooked up w/Hohner), P.T. Gazell, Terry MacMillian, Buddy Green & later when Jimmy Liban moved to town, we got close too.(He just SMOKED!) Living in Nashville since '79, opened the doors to play with/sit in with/and or record with lots of "Cool People" like: Fire Fall, John Prine, Les Dudek (who did the guitar solo on Ramblin' Man), Micky Newbury, the late Jerry Reed, Max Carl(Jack Mac & the Heart Attack, 38 Special & Grand Funk), TG Shephard, Delbert McClinton, Roy Rogers Jr., Roger Mcguinn, Dave Perkins, Richie Furay(Buffalo Springfield & Poco)- Richie, along w/Steven Wienmiester from "Fire Fall" sang on my newest Cd & Reese Wynans(Double Trouble), the late Byrd Burton(Rythem Aces) AL Perkins(Burito Bros, Steve Stills & Gram Parsons), Slid guitarest Jack Pearson(Allman Bro's), Michael Omartian & Delbert's drummer Lynn Williams all played on it. In the mid 90's I was in the country group "Western Flyer". We had sevral songs on the radio & videos on CMT. I have also done a lot of commercials like: Ford, McDonalds, Jack Daniels, a national "Hardees" spot w/Chuck leavell, Black Eyed Peas, Coors Light, MC Masterpiece BBQ sause & others. I also played harp on the theme music for Jeff Foxworthy's "Big Night Out" show on CMT. I am currently involved in a blues/rock project w/Reese Wynans & headed up by singer/songwriter/guitar player Dave Perkins. We got a record in the can & hope to play out this year. It is called "Pistol City Holyness". Dave is on my myspace page & you can check out our stuff on his site. I play solo a lot & that is, me singing w/acoustic, more & more "rack harp", & playing instrumentals (mostly mine) w/ tracks. I write a lot & I play songwriter rooms, clubs that "appreciate" solo acts, resorts, churches, shooting events (I shoot registered Sporting Clays) & most any place that will book me. I reciently did 4 days of harmonica for "Band In A Box" This is PC version of Mac's Garage Band. There were a lot of Nashville's finest on it so it was a great oppertunity to be included in their latest software. I play "Old" Hohner Golden Melodies customized by Joe Spiers, an Ed Foley hand made guitar & shoot only BrowninG shotguns. I have recorded 4 solo Cds & will get info up here shortly & also had my Detroit harp buddy Kevin McKay record my instrumental "Golden Mel" on his new jazz cd. Hope you all will find all this interesting. I just did an interview w/Jason Ricci that is up on You Tube (Ricci Road Interviews) & we cover a lot of stuff there as well. Keep on Harpin' & God Bless TJ KLay 615-972-6583 myspace.com/tjklay firstname.lastname@example.org Psalm 37:4
Becomming more efficient in the positions I play in besides 2nd & exploring new ones(to me). Playing more complex guitar when I'm playing harp on the rack. Getting a Great Big "amped sound" (with out cupping hands) while I'm playing guitar & "rack harp". Writing better songs, w & wo lyricks. Shooting higher scores in Sporting Clays, The last book I read: The Shack...by W. Paul Young
